Wide-flange beams, commonly referred to as H-beams due to their distinctive "H"-shaped cross-section featuring parallel flanges and a central web, are the material of choice for contemporary truss frameworks. Produced as hot-rolled sections to standards such as ASTM A992 (Fy=345 MPa) and EN 10025 S355, they deliver:

Engineered Cross-Section Efficiency‌: Standard sizes vary from 100×100×6×8mm to 900×300×16×28mm (Height × Width × Web Thickness × Flange Thickness).
High Load Capacity‌: Section modulus (Sx) values can reach 6,380 cm³ for demanding structural applications.
Dimensional Stability‌: In compliance with AISC 360, flange width-to-thickness ratios are maintained under 0.56√(E/Fy).


System Design & Layout

Trusses utilizing H-beams are commonly engineered in three primary configurations:


Parallel Chord Truss Systems‌:

  • Chords: Utilizing HEA 400-600 series sections.

  • Web Elements: Employing Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) connected via K-type or Joint connections.

  • Common Span Range: 24-60 meters, typically for industrial roofing.


Triangular Configuration Trusses‌:

  • A hybrid design using HEB 300 series members for chords and T-sections for verticals.

  • Joint intervals are optimally designed between 1/8 and 1/12 of the total span.


Curved Chord Arrangements‌:

  • Fabricated from tapered H-sections (per EN 10210) with a minimum curvature radius of 15 meters.

  • Primary Uses: Cantilevered stadium roofs and arched bridge structures.

  • Achieves a roughly 40% reduction in self-weight compared to concrete structural solutions.


Fire Resistance Ratings‌:

  • Unprotected structural endurance: 15-30 minutes (criteria: ambient temperature increase below 550°C).

  • Application of intumescent coatings can increase fire resistance to 90-120 minutes.
